The foundation of Agora Modiano’s operation is the effort made from the very first day to be a “neutral waste” venue.

An original waste management system implemented from the storage areas to the Agora’s entrances aims to ensure that nothing ends up in the green bin.

Regarding other materials, the four main recycling streams for shopkeepers and those present on the premises are routed. Packaging, compression, and recycling have been planned for paper and plastic as compression and recycling for metal. At the same time, the glass will be collected in two “bells” placed in Ermou and V. Herakliou streets. In addition, small bins are located in the area for collecting recyclable materials for Agora’s visitors.

Agora’s big bet, however, is to reduce – even reaching zero-waste levels – co-mingled waste, i.e., mainly organic waste, which is bound to increase in quantity in a food and catering market.

In addition, a standard refrigerator has been installed in V. Herakleiou’s open space, where all organic waste from butchers, fishmongers, and grocery stores is stored and properly packaged.

When sufficient quantities are collected, they will be picked up by a specialized company, which will use them appropriately for biogas or animal feed production. Overall, Agora’s organizational structure has provided four collection rooms for all materials and a separation and management system.

There are also blue and brown bins in specific shops  – for recyclable and organic waste respectively – to make the system work more efficiently. The aim is that the final fraction of mixed waste – what should go into the brown bin and be sent to the landfill – should be minimal to zero.

Agora is synonymous with innovation
at every level and sets an example for the city

The success of the process is based on two fundamental principles. The first is the participation of all shop owners, employees, and visitors to the Agora Modiano. The second is the original and organized design, which can become a “pilot” for implementing this waste management system in many other areas of Thessaloniki, especially in the catering sector.
